John Lewis was voted "Britains Favourite Department Store" in
2007, and it's easy to see why. The store is known for its up-market
products, friendly staff and the "Never knowingly undersold" slogan.
The original John Lewis store was opened in 1864 on the same Oxford
Street site at which the flagship store is still based. The store is
owned by the John Lewis Partnership, which in turn is owned by the
employees of the company. Other brands in the partnership include Peter
Jones - the Sloane Square department store that was purchased in 1905 -
and the Waitrose supermarket.
